According to Australian health promotion and heart health charity hearts4heart, an estimated half a million Australians are living with Atrial Fibrillation (AF).

AF is a heart condition where the top chambers of the heart beat fast and erratically due to a disturbance in the heart’s electrical system.

If left untreated, AF can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and even dementia.

Many people may not even know they have it, with up to 30% of Australians living with undiagnosed AF and it affects young, otherwise healthy people too.

This week (22-28 September) is Atrial Fibrillation Week, and a simple 25 minutes of movement per day and a pulse check could save a life.

This year, hearts4heart is raising awareness about AF, its risk factors and the importance of early detection.

With early diagnosis and treatment, people living with AF can reduce their risk of complications.
