Playgrounds still close to Minister’s heart
It’s no wonder Federal Minister Kristy McBain has such an interest in playgrounds. It was a playground issue that kick started her political career 15 years ago – first as a Bega Valley Shire councillor and then mayor before being elected Federal Member for Eden-Monaro.

It was a playground issue that kick started her political career 15 years ago – first as a Bega Valley Shire councillor and then mayor before being elected Federal Member for Eden-Monaro.
She is now the Federal Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories and Minister for Emergency Management.
“Back in 2012 I ran for council in Bega because I didn’t agree with a decision made about a local playground and now almost 15 years later I am still just as passionate about making sure our kids have the facilities they need,” Mrs McBain said.
The Minister was in the Yass Valley last week and took the time out to inspect progress on the new Murrumbatemen playground.
Mrs McBain helped secure funding for the playground four years ago “after hearing firsthand from locals about the need for more community infrastructure in this fast-growing town”.
“It was fantastic to visit the site and to see just how far it has come,” Mrs McBain said.
“The playground is nearly complete and it’s shaping up to be something really special for local families.”
Mrs McBain congratulated Yass Valley Council and RAM Constructions for the work completed so far.
“I can’t wait to see local families enjoying this fantastic space when it opens late October.”
Approximately $1 million is being spent delivering the new all-abilities playground in Hercules Street.
It is being funded through the Australian Government’s Investing in Our Communities Program, the Local Roads and Infrastructure Program and Council’s own Development Contributions Reserve.
Work commenced in April this year.
Once complete, the new playground will provide a range of inclusive and accessible play opportunities for children of all ages and abilities.
