A 56-year-old man will face court today after a police officer allegedly suffered a head wound requiring seven staples during an arrest following a pursuit near Goulburn.

Police allege an officer attached to The Hume Police District attempted to stop a black Volkswagen sedan on Range Road at Mummel, about 20 kilometres north-west of Goulburn, about 10pm on Wednesday.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, police initiated a pursuit.

Police will allege the vehicle stopped at a property on Pomeroy Mill Ford Road, where the driver got out and threw a resealable plastic bag over a fence before being arrested.

While officers were escorting the man to a police vehicle, police allege he resisted arrest, causing a male officer to suffer a large laceration to his head.

Police further allege that while the officer was disoriented, the man escaped custody, retrieved the plastic bag and went inside the property.

Additional officers arrived a short time later, providing medical assistance to the injured officer before arresting the 56-year-old man inside the property.

Although the plastic bag was not located, police later executed a search warrant at the property and seized a number of drug-related exhibits.

The arrested man was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital under police guard for treatment to soft tissue injuries before being released about 11am yesterday and taken to Goulburn Police Station.

The injured officer was also treated at Goulburn Base Hospital, where his head wound required seven surgical staples.

The 56-year-old was charged with 37 offences, including 31 counts of supplying a prohibited drug, supplying prohibited drugs on an ongoing basis, failing to stop for police, hindering or resisting police, wounding a police officer in the execution of duty reckless as to actual bodily harm, escaping police custody and doing an act intending to pervert the course of justice.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 3 today (Friday, 17 July).
