Officer charged after Hume Highway pursuit

About 10.20am yesterday morning (Friday, June 26), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command allegedly detected a silver Mercedes wagon travelling at more than the signposted 110km/h speed limit in the southbound lanes of the Hume Highway at Goulburn.
Police allege the driver failed to stop when directed, prompting a pursuit that continued for about 65 kilometres before tyre deflation devices were successfully deployed.
A short distance later, police had established a second tyre deflation site and were deploying tyre spikes when the driver allegedly swerved from lane two towards officers standing in the breakdown lane before correcting the vehicle and continuing along the Federal Highway. Police allege the officers were forced to abandon the deployment and feared for their safety.
A short time later, the vehicle became disabled and came to a stop on the Federal Highway at Sutton.
The driver, identified by police as a 26-year-old off-duty officer attached to the Southern West Metropolitan Region, was arrested.
He was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly, drive recklessly, furiously or at a speed dangerous, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and possessing a prescribed restricted substance.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 3 later today (Saturday, June 27).
Police suspended the officer's driver's licence and confirmed he has also been suspended from duty without pay.
