Plans for an off-leash dog park, walking track and pump track are gaining traction in Marulan.

The Marulan Progress Association (MPA) and the Marulan Chamber of Commerce (MRCC) have been in discussions with Goulburn Mulwaree Council about the possibility of the idea.

Mark Fenton-Jones, a member of the Marulan Progress Association, felt that the village was lacking these facilities for new families who are moving to the town.

“I joined the MPA late last year and saw the need for an off-leash dog park, as Marulan currently doesn’t have one,” he said.

“I searched around for unused land in the town and saw 5 areas that could be potential spots. We then approached Council and it took off from there. A lady called Anna also approached me with a concept of adding a walking and ‘pump’ track (‘pump’ meaning exercise equipment - adjacent to the track for everyone to use) to the dog park as well.”

One MPA member also noticed that many people who stop off in the town – especially those with caravans – often have their dogs with them.

“Some of the people this member told me about were quite elderly and were looking for a place to exercise their dogs,” Mr. Fenton-Jones said.

“Council is also putting together a Masterplan for Marulan, with a chance for community feedback.”

The next meeting of the Marulan Discretionary Fund Working Party is coming up in December.

A council spokesperson told The Southern Wire this was indeed the case, and that the meetings and discussions were still in their ‘early stages.’

“The ideas for a walking track, pump track, and dog park in Marulan, as well as improvements to the basketball court, footpaths, signage and crossings, have been raised during recent Discretionary Fund meetings with representatives from the Marulan Progress Association and the Marulan Chamber of Commerce,” the spokesperson said.

“At this stage, these remain in early discussion and planning phases. While these are exciting and positive ideas, it's important that any future development is appropriately located and designed to best meet community needs and long-term usage. Further planning and consultation will be required before any decisions are made. Ultimately, the Council wants to work with everyone in the Marulan community to deliver improvements that meet the needs of the community.”

Mr. Fenton - Jones also noted that the motel located on the southern end of town, the Marulan Motor Inn - near the truckstop - has now got new owners.

“The new owners of the Marulan Motor Inn (MMI) report positive interest from travellers since purchasing their motel last month,” Mr. Fenton- Jones reported on the Marulan Progress Association Facebook page.

“A director of MMI, Mr. Nirav Thakker, said that they will open the tavern and restaurant as soon as the motel operation settles down. He thanked the community for its support, with special mention of the local businesses that helped. The motel has 19 deluxe units charging around $150 a night and three double deluxe units charging $160 a night.”
