Wingecarribee residents are being encouraged to take a stance against domestic violence and abuse in November.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence will commence on November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and will run through until December 10 (Human Rights Day).
The 16 Days of Activism is an international campaign led annually by UN Women with communities around the world joining the call to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls.
Locally, the Southern Highlands community will come together on the evening of Thursday, November 26 at The Brians Inn for Pop In’s ‘Beyond the Silence – Light the Night’ event.
Pop In is a Moss Vale-based hub for women and children threatened or impacted by domestic violence and abuse in the Wingecarribee Shire.
Professional staff are supported by a team of invaluable and committed volunteers.
The November 26 event, from7pm-8pm, will provide an opportunity for local residents to gather and to remember women and children whose lives have been lost to domestic violence and abuse, to reflect on the impact of violence within our communities and to stand together behind one clear message: We say NO to domestic violence and abuse.
Pop In is encouraging local residents to do more than attend the vigil.
Local businesses, schools, community groups and residents are being invited to take a visible stand during this year’s 16 Days of Activism by lighting their windows orange, displaying signage or sponsoring a lantern in remembrance of a woman or child lost to domestic violence and abuse.
Pop In Chair Vicki Kelley said it was important for the community to come together and to take a stand.
“During the 16 days of Activism, our community has an opportunity to come together, remember those lost and make it clear that domestic violence and abuse have no place in the Southern Highlands.
Light the Night is a free community event but registrations are essential. To register for Light the Night go to https://www.popin.org.au/light-the-night. To sponsor a lantern, go to Sponsor a Lantern https://popin.supporterhub.net.au/events/sponsoralantern
