New public preschool an investment in our kids
The new preschool – set to open early next year – will unlock places for up to 80 children per week in the year before they start school.

Work has started on a new public preschool in Moss Vale.
The new preschool – set to open early next year – will unlock places for up to 80 children per week in the year before they start school.
NSW Minister for Planning and Public Places Paul Scully inspected the construction site on the grounds of Moss Vale Public School earlier this week with Labor spokesperson for Goulburn Bob Nanva.
A NSW Government spokesperson said the new pre-school would offer high-quality learning “to support children’s transition to Kindergarten and schooling as well as ease pick up and drop off for parents with older students at the same school”.
In addition to state-of-the-art learning areas, the new preschool will also include staff facilities, a kitchen and landscaped outdoor play areas.
The Moss Vale preschool is one on nearly 100 being delivered across the state as part of a $769 million investment set to benefit 9000 children.
Mr Scully said it was “great” to see a new public preschool coming out of the grounds of Moss Vale Public School and would help to make sure “our littlest learners get the best start to life and are set up for success”.
Mr Nanva MLC said better access to fee-free preschool places in the Southern Highlands would help families juggle the challenges of parenting and works “and will help kids to develop the learning and social skills they need to thrive when they get to school”.
NSW Minister for Families and Early Education Pru Car said families in the Southern Highlands had had “limited access” to quality early childhood education for “far too long”.
“Parents in Moss Vale shouldn’t have to choose between quality early learning and affordability and this new fee-free preschool means local children will get the best start in the year before school,” she said.
Principial of Moss Vale Primary School, Katherine Hurst, said the new preschool would provide families across the Southern Highlands with access to “high-quality, play-based learning right here in our community”.
“Staffed by exceptional educators the new preschool is designed to be accessible and inclusive for every child, regardless of their background or needs,” Mrs Hurst said.
“Located on school grounds, our preschool gives children an early to school life, building confidence and familiarity that will support their Kindergarten transition.
“As a school that supports children from preschool through to Year 6, we are committed to making the first years of education the best they can be,” Mrs Hurst said.
“We look forward to welcoming our youngest learners and their families very soon.”
Minister Scully told Radio 2ST this week that 49 of the 100 fee-free preschools being delivered across the state were outside of the Greater Sydney region.
“It gives an opportunity for our littlest learners to get a really good start to their education and if you ask any primary school principal or teacher they will tell you just how important it is to get some preschool and early learning education before you get to primary school but also being co-located means the daunting nature of going to school for the first time will be lower because you’ve already been there.”
Mr Scully described the NSW Government’s investment in 100 facilities across the state as “big” but told Radio 2ST that children would be the “lifetime beneficiaries”.
