Moss Vale’s Remembrance Day plans well under way
The Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch’s plans for the 2026 Remembrance Day commemoration are well under way.
The Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch’s plans for the 2026 Remembrance Day commemoration are well under way.
The commemoration service will take place on the Remembrance Lawn of the Moss Vale Services Club (corner of Argyle Road and Yarrawa Street) starting at 10.45 am on Wednesday 11 November (members and guests to assemble at 10.30 am).
Remembrance Day commemorates the service and sacrifice of military personnel who died or suffered while serving in wars, conflicts, and peace operations.
The date and time marks the anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, signed to end fighting on the Western Front in World War I, which officially took effect ‘at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month’.
“One of the first things that will be seen in the Moss Vale community will be the sale of poppies, badges and other memorabilia to raise funds for the Sub-Branch’s activities,” Moss Vale RSL Sub Branch secretary Richard Batterley told The Southern Wire.
The dates, times and locations of the poppy and badge sales are as follows:
- Moss Vale Newsagency: Friday 30 October & Friday 6 November;
- Moss Vale Civic Centre: Thursday 5 November (9.00 am to 3.00 pm on all days); and
- Moss Vale Services Club: Thursday 29th October and 4 November (from 5.45 pm to 8.00 pm).
The commemoration service at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, will have members of the Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch from all the Australian Defence Force services ‘on parade’.
It will also include representatives of the many schools in the Moss Vale area, as well as community organisations such as the Country Women’s Association and Legacy, and the emergency service organisations (Police, Fire and Rescue etc).
“Remembrance Day is an important date not only on the RSL’s calendar but also for the Moss Vale community,” President of the Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch, Dr Allan Watt told The Southern Wire.
“Past years have seen ever increasing numbers attending the service. And it is particularly gratifying to see so many younger people being part of it.”
One of the highlights of the service is the laying of remembrance wreaths and other tributes on the war memorial on the Remembrance Lawn.
Everyone should note that you do not have to be a retired or current member of the Defence Forces to become a member of the Moss Vale RSL Sub-Branch.
Relatives of defence force members and people who have provided service to the RSL can also join as Affiliate Members.
Many of the participating organisations will be laying wreathes and tributes on the day, and it is also an opportunity for any member of the Moss Vale community to lay their own personal tribute.
If they wish to do this, they should notify the Sub-Branch in advance by email at Moss-ValeSB@rslnsw.org.au.
