A meeting will be held in Crookwell next month to explore the potential for a small-scale, multi-species processing facility in the Upper Lachlan Shire.
The meeting is being hosted by Southern Tablelands Produce and Holding Ground Australia and will be held at the Crookwell Services Club.
Livestock producers, landholders and interested members of the community are all welcome to attend.
Holding Ground was founded to put processing power back in farmers’ hands.
It works alongside farmers to build on-farm and regional processing and direct market pathways – enabling viable farm businesses and stronger regional food systems.
As abbatoirs close or consolidate around large-volume, export-oriented models, access to local processing has become one of the most significant constraints on small and regenerative farm businesses.
A spokesperson said a processing facility in the Upper Lachlan Shire could offer greater certainty for producers and more flexibility than current processing options.
It could potential cater for multiple livestock species – including larger animals up to 1000kg liveweight.
The August 17 meeting will be held at the Crookwell Services Club between 2pm and 4pm and according to organisers will offer people the opportunity to have a genuine say and help shape the future of livestock processing in the Upper Lachlan region.
