Mayor committed to making Yass Valley a better place
Yass Valley mayor Jasmin Jones and deputy mayor Kristin Butler will lead council through until the next local government elections in September 2028.
Yass Valley mayor Jasmin Jones and deputy mayor Kristin Butler will lead council through until the next local government elections in September 2028.
Councillors Jones and Butler were both re-elected to their positions in the mid-term elections held at council’s September meeting on Thursday.
Cr Jones - nominated by Crs Butler and David Rothwell - defeated Cr Adrian Cameron 5-2 in the contest for mayor with two councillors abstaining from the vote.
Because it was a secret ballot it is unknown which two councillors abstained from voting.
Cr Cameron was nominated by himself and Cr Fleur Flannery.
Cr Butler – nominated by Crs Jones and Rothwell – was re-elected to the position of deputy mayor unopposed.
Cr Jones has now clocked up 14 years’ service as an elected councillor – the last two of them as mayor.
She used her September message to the community to outline some of council’s key achievements over the past two years including completion of the Parkwood LEP and Development Control Plan, progressing the upgrade of the Yass Water Treatment Plant and work on the Crago Mill Precinct Project including construction of a new council administration building and town library.
“Two years in, I feel incredibly blessed to have had the opportunity to lead our council team, to listen to our community and to learn, every day, more about what makes this place special and what we can do to make it even better,” she wrote.
“There is plenty more work to do. But there is also an enormous amount to look forward to.”
Cr Jones acknowledged the service of deputy mayor Kristin Butler and the seven other councillors who, she said, had been “chairing committees, bringing their expertise and unique voices to the table, supporting community groups and committees and fearlessly advocating for our ratepayers and residents when we come together to make decisions on your behalf”.
She also thanked the community for trusting her with the privilege of serving them and representing them as a councillor and as mayor.
