Australia Post has announced it will undertake major works on the Yass Post Office to “cement the future of a much-loved connection point for locals”.

Australia Post confirmed this week that it was in the “early stages” of planning a significant restoration and upgrade of the heritage-listed building.

At this stage it hasn’t provided any timeline for the work to be carried out but says it will continue to update the community as planning progresses.

Yass Post Office was designed by the Colonial Architect’s Office under James Barnett and was completed in 1884. The clock turret was a later addition.

The building was added to the NSW State Heritage Register on December 22, 2000.

Australia Post General Manager Retail Operations Sarah Coe, said preserving the Yass Post Office was about “investing in the future and respecting its rich history”. She said the post office had been serving for well over a century and continued to operate “and serve the community as usual” despite some deterioration to the exterior façade.

She said Australia Post was now focused on its refresh.

Ms Coe said the upgrade would enhance the services locals rely on including parcel delivery, financial services like Bank@Post, identification services and a variety of retail items including core postal products. Free 24/7 parcel lockers will be also installed – giving local residents convenient and secure access to their online purchases.

The lockers will also allow customers to drop-off pre-paid packages by following merchant instructions, providing greater flexibility for busy households wanting to return online purchases.

The Australia Post announcement comes just weeks after it came under criticism from Yass Valley councillors over the length of time being taken to undertake repairs on the building’s exterior.

Cr Allan McGrath said protective hoarding and security fencing had been in place around the post office since March 2024 with “no apparent efforts being made” to address the deteriorating façade.

It was suggested at council’s August 27 meeting that the building was perhaps no longer considered for purpose and Australia Post may be looking for an alternate site.

Mayor Jasmin Jones welcomed this week’s announcement, describing the post office as a “strong and visible link to our early pioneering heritage and our prominent place in the formation of the premier state of NSW”.

She said early discussions with Australia Post indicate the work would be completed by March 2027.

Cr Jones thanked the “fresh faces” now working in Australia Post who had ‘done the right thing’ by owning the issues of the past and presenting a plan of action moving forward.
