The Illawarra Highway has reopened at Macquarie Pass after an early-morning rock fall forced the road to close in both directions.

The highway was closed near Mount Murray Road while crews worked to clear rocks and debris from the roadway.

Motorists had been advised to delay non-essential travel or use an alternative route while the clean-up was carried out.

The road reopened just after 7am on Monday.
