Letter to the Editor: Wingecarribee’s Roads Are Falling Behind — Take a Lesson from Sū’ào, Taiwan
I am sure even the most skilled drivers would find it difficult to navigate the Highland’s roads today.

I am sure even the most skilled drivers would find it difficult to navigate the Highland’s roads today. From Penrose to Balmoral there is a consistent patchwork of potholes, ruts and uneven surfaces. For a region known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant communities, the state of our roads is embarrassing. Therefore, it’s high time council did something.
Last week I returned from a trip to Sū’ào in Taiwan. This town is situated in the country’s northeast and has a slightly smaller population than the Wingecarribee Shire. It is also said to be one of Taiwan’s wettest towns. Thus, providing an insightful contrast to here. Despite the regular rainfall I observed the roads in Sū’ào are well-maintained, safe and accessible. Furthermore, a local told me the town’s authorities prioritise regular maintenance and listen to community feedback. This proves rural and regional areas can maintain excellent road conditions
Thus, Wingecarribee Council ought to get their act together. Our roads need urgent attention—not only for the safety and convenience of residents but also to protect our economy and reputation. We deserve roads that reflect the quality and pride of our region, not roads that feel like a defensive driving course.
Using ‘bad weather’ as an excuse frankly is just a cop out. Let Sū’ào’s example be a wake-up call. Wingecarribee’s roads are overdue for serious investment and care. We should demand and vote for nothing less. Afterall Mayor Fitzpatrick did promise a “revolution” during last year’s election campaign.
Sam Zilinskas, Bowral.
