The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) will hold a week-long ‘metropolitan outreach’ in Campbelltown late next month (October).

The program will include free events for community members, local councillors and others working in the NSW public sector and is expected to attract people from across the region.

The ICAC was established by the NSW Government in 1988 to protect the public interest, prevent breaches of public trust and guide the conduct of public officials in the NSW public sector.

Its principal functions are to:

·        Investigate and expose corrupt conduct in the NSW public sector;

·        Actively prevent corruption through advice and assistance;

·        Educate the NSW community and public sector about corruption and its effects;

The outreach program will include a session for elected councillors on Tuesday, October 28 with ICAC chief commissioner John Hatzistergos.

The interactive session will explore key corruption risks by looking at recent and ongoing corruption issues and by drawing on the ICAC’s most recent councillor-related investigations.

Corruption risks to be examined will include inappropriate lobbying, overseas travel, development approvals, conflicts of interest and gifts and benefits.

On October 29 there will be a community forum with ICAC commissioner Helen Murrell, providing an opportunity for local residents to discuss integrity and corruption issues in person and to learn more about the role of the ICAC.

There will also be a number of workshops for public officials from October 27 to October 30 including:

·        Building a culture of integrity;

·        Corruption prevention in a regulatory role;

·        Corruption prevention in procurement and contract management;

·        An introduction into fact-finding investigations;

·        Corruption prevention in grant-making;

·        Corruption prevention in the NSW planning system;

·        Corruption prevention for non-government organisations, and

·        Corruption prevention for managers.

All workshops will be free of charge but places will be strictly limited and registration is essential.
