Hurley’s Back — As Mostyn Faces Pressure to Quit
General David Hurley, former Governor General of Australia, has returned to the national stage this week.

The former Governor-General, David Hurley returned to public life this week — and to the Southern Tablelands — to officially reopen the Yass Soldiers Club after major renovations.
Hurley, who wrapped up his five-year term as Governor-General in July last year, spoke of mateship and praised the club’s “amazing” new facilities. It’s a fitting return for a man who has given decades of service: five years as Governor-General, five as NSW Governor, three as Defence Chief, and forty-two years in uniform.
But Hurley’s re-emergence comes as his successor faces mounting heat. Current Governor-General Sam Mostyn is under pressure after Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson claimed Mostyn is a member of Equality Australia — an organisation Henderson labelled “a far-left extremist group.” Henderson has publicly called on Mostyn to stand down.
Mostyn, however, has made no comment.
Meanwhile, Hurley’s schedule is full. He’s backed a national push by psychiatrists for fairer treatment of mental health patients — calling for “equal treatment” across all conditions — and met with Indonesian officials amid President Prabowo Subianto’s plans to strengthen the nation’s defence.
As one former Governor-General steps forward and another faces scrutiny, Australia’s most symbolic office is again in the spotlight.
The Southern Wire will continue to follow developments.
