Hundreds of extra truck movements following train derailment
Goulburn-Mulwaree Council is warning of a significant increase in heavy vehicle movements on local freight roads following the train derailment at Berrima.

Goulburn-Mulwaree Council is warning of a significant increase in heavy vehicle movements on local freight roads following the train derailment at Berrima.
As reported by The Southern Wire, the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) has suspended the accreditation of Holdco Holdings – trading as Southern Short haul Railroad (SSR) – following a ‘series’ of accidents including the derailment.
ONRSR said the decision had been made “based on a determination that there is, or would be, an immediate or serious risk to safety unless Holdco’s accreditation was suspended”.
It is unknown how long it will take for Holdco to get its accreditation back or for it to return to full operations.
Goulburn-Mulwaree Council’s General Manager Scott Gallacher said there would be hundreds of additional truck movements on local roads as Boral shifts its rail freight operations to road transport.
He said the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure had endorsed temporary transport arrangements that will allow Boral to dispatch up to 300 laden trucks from its Peppertree Quarry near Marulan and up to 150 laden trucks a day from the Marulan South Limestone Mine.
He said this would result in a significant increase in heavy vehicle movements on Marulan South Road and other local freight routes around the clock, seven days a week.
“While council was not consulted prior to the Department’s decision, we are now working with Boral to manage community concerns and assess impacts on road condition and safety,” Mr Gallacher said earlier today (Wednesday).
“Council will undertake urgent condition assessments of the affected road and continue discussions with Boral regarding monitoring, maintenance and mitigation measures during this temporary period.”
He said the arrangements would remain in place until August 15 or until Holdco’s accreditation is reinstated – whichever occurs first.
“Council acknowledges the concerns of residents and will continue to advocate for the community while supporting safe and effective freight movements.” Mr Gallacher said.
