A man has died after a fiery crash on the Hume Highway this morning.

Emergency services were called to Breadalbane, about 32 kilometres south-west of Goulburn, just after 4am.

NSW Police say a road train and a B-double truck were involved in the crash, which temporarily closed the main road route between Sydney and Melbourne.

Police said the driver of the b-double truck died at the scene but is yet to be formally identified.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The 31-year-old man who was driving the B-triple road train was assessed for minor head injuries and taken to Yass Hospital in a stable condition to undertake mandatory testing.

NSW Police Superintendent Linda Bradbury said preliminary investigations indicated the B-double had some mechanical issues and broke down.

"The 31-year-old male driver of that B-double has gotten out, activated all his hazard requirements, and notified other drivers on CV radio that he had broken down in lane one," she said.

"A short period of time later, a road train carrying aerosols has collided with the rear of the B-double, which were carrying groceries at the time."

Superintendent Bradbury said the two vehicles caught alight in the impact and the driver of the truck carrying aerosols died.

"The driver of the second vehicle is deceased; inquiries are continuing to identify who that driver is and the family haven't been notified," she said.

Fire and Rescue Acting Superintendent Peter Murray said that at 1pm on Friday, there were three trucks still monitoring the scene.

"The fire continues to smoulder and firefighters remain on scene to extinguish the fire," he said.

All lanes on the Hume Highway have since reopened after being closed for several hours.

NSW Police are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward or contact crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

On June 30 an explosive crash involving six semi-trailers at the Windmills Rest Area closed the highway in both directions.

Superintendent Bradbury said there were further investigations to be made about the stretch of road on the Hume Highway.

"We have had several incidents within heavy motor vehicles on the Hume Highway between Yass and Goulburn. NSW Police conduct regular operations in the area to ensure a reduction in road trauma," she said.

"We're also working heavily with our partners NSW Transport and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to understand why we have had several incidents lately."

Superintendent Bradbury gave a message of support for the trucking community.

"My message for heavy vehicle drivers is thank you for what you do, but please ensure that you're fully rested, no distractions and that you keep safe while you do a great job."
