A driver is missing after a fiery crash on the Hume Highway this morning.

Emergency services were called to Breadalbane, about 32 kilometres south-west of Goulburn, just after 4am.

NSW Police say a road train and a B-double truck were involved in the crash, which temporarily closed the main road route between Sydney and Melbourne.

The 31-year-old man who was driving the B-triple road train was assessed for minor head injuries and taken to Yass Hospital in a stable condition, but the driver of the second truck remains missing.

Fire and Rescue acting Superintendent Peter Murray said the incident was ongoing, with all emergency service agencies still in place.

"At this time, the fire continues to burn," he said.

"Firefighters are working to extinguish that fire and contain any runoff."

Northbound lanes on the Hume Highway are expected to be closed for several hours while police investigate.

Southbound lanes have now reopened.

Diversions suitable for all vehicles are in place via Canberra on the Barton and Federal highways.

It is the second crash at Breadalbane in the past month.

On June 30 an explosive crash involving six semi-trailers at the Windmills Rest Area closed the highway in both directions.
