Tarago is set to lose its postal agency this month — but Australia Post says the fight is on to keep postal services in the town.
The agency’s last day under the current operator will be Friday, September 25, leaving the small rural community facing uncertainty over how its postal services will continue.
Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said she had been advised of the decision by Australia Post.
“Australia Post has stated there are currently no changes to postal services,” Mrs Tuckerman said.
Australia Post is now seeking expressions of interest from businesses willing to take over the Community Postal Agency, with applications closing at 5pm on Friday, September 11 — just two weeks before the current operator finishes.
The announcement has sparked frustration among some Tarago residents over both the potential loss of the outlet and the short timeframe to find a replacement.
“We deserve a solution that works for Tarago — not simply the closure of another essential rural service,” one resident wrote online.
“Please, let’s see some advocacy and action on this.”
Another resident said: “Doesn’t leave the community much time to figure out an alternative … but I’m sure we can!”
The Southern Wire contacted Australia Post seeking clarification on what would happen to postal services after September 25 if a replacement operator was not secured.
In response, an Australia Post spokesperson said the postal service was working to maintain services in Tarago.
“Australia Post understands how important its services are to the Tarago community and is working to maintain postal services in the town,” the spokesperson said.
“Following the agent’s decision to cease operating later this month, we are seeking expressions of interest for a new operator to run a Community Postal Agency.”
Australia Post said applications had already been received.
“Applications close on Friday 11 September and we thank the businesses that have applied so far,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson vowed to keep the community informed.
“We will continue to keep the community updated and thank the outgoing postal agent at Tarago for his service to the community ahead of his last day on 25 September.”
Community Postal Agencies are generally operated from within another local business rather than as a stand-alone outlet and provide basic postal services including mailing products and the sending and receiving of mail and parcels.
