Highway shut, traffic to be diverted through village back streets

Upgrade works on the level crossing in Robertson will have a major impact on traffic flows on the Illawarra Highway and will see hundreds of cars diverted down narrow streets with limited sight distance.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) is planning to carry out the works between 11pm on Friday, June 12 and 5am on Monday, June 15.
It will involve a full closure of the Illawarra Highway (Hoddle Street) with traffic to be diverted down Meryla Street, South Street and Sassafras Way for the duration of the works.
ARTC’s Traffic Management Plan includes:
· Traffic controllers positioned at intersections along the detour route;
· Advanced warning signage and directional signage throughout the diversion;
· Variable Message Boards on State Roads approaching Robertson, including within the Albion Park area, to inform motorists of the closure and to encourage alternate route planning.
The Traffic Management Plan was the main item up for discussion at the last meeting of Wingecarribee’s Local Transport Forum.
Staff had recommended that the Traffic Management Plan be received and noted but also that the ARTC be asked to review the plan and to consider if as much work as possible can be done at night to minimise disruption to the road network and to the local community.
However the ARTC plan already stated that civil and rail crews would be working continuously (“around the clock”) for a period of 36 to 48 hours until the work is complete.
It is unsure what was discussed at the Local Transport Forum as meetings are closed to the public, however ARTC will now simply be asked to undertake vegetation trimming on the corner of South Street and Sassafrass Way to improve site distance.
