The conservation of Goulburn’s iconic Rocky Hill War Memorial Tower has received state recognition, with the project awarded a Highly Commended honour at the 2026 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards.

The conservation project was recognised in the Built Conservation category following extensive specialist works carried out ahead of the Memorial’s centenary in December 2025.

The works addressed significant concrete deterioration and long-standing water ingress issues which had previously caused repeated closures and threatened the integrity of the landmark memorial.

The project involved concrete spalling remediation, replacement of decaying structural steel, stonework repairs and repointing, along with the application of protective coatings aimed at preserving the structure into the future.

A local contractor delivered the conservation works, which required specialist heritage expertise and careful restoration work in challenging conditions.

Project Manager Sarah Ruberto said the recognition reflected the importance of preserving one of Goulburn’s most significant places of remembrance.

“This is a fantastic outcome and an important recognition of the role the Rocky Hill War Memorial continues to play within our community,” Ms Ruberto said.

“These conservation works were about far more than repairing a structure. They were about protecting a place of reflection, remembrance and local identity for future generations.”

The recognition comes amid continued community interest in Rocky Hill following the Memorial’s centenary celebrations and the current exhibition, In Their Honour: A Century of Remembrance, on display at the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum.

The exhibition explores the history and ongoing significance of the Memorial over the past 100 years.

The project was funded through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service program alongside additional investment from Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
