Friends of the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter (FOWAS) has put out a call for more volunteers as it prepares to celebrate its 21st anniversary,

FOWAS volunteers have been working behind the scenes for the past two decades helping to improve the lives of animals in care at the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter in Moss Vale.

However more volunteers are needed to help with a range of different activities.

A FOWAS spokesperson said volunteers didn’t have to commit to a lot of hours and there were many ways they could help depending on their time, interests and skills.

Those activities include helping with fundraising activities and events, collecting donation tins, assisting with FOWAS promotions and social media and supporting the group’s adoption and animal welfare initiatives.

FOWAS is also looking for new committee members to help bring some fresh ideas, skills and energy to the organisation and to help shape its future.

“You don’t need to be an expert in animal welfare or have previous committee experience,” the spokesperson said.

“If you care about animals, are willing to contribute and would like to make a difference in our local community, we would love to hear from you.”

There are a number of committee positions available.

The organisation is particularly keen to hear from people that may have skills or experience in fundraising, events, social media, communications, administration, finance, business or community engagement.

FOWAS was established in 2006 to advocate for abandoned cats and dogs in the Wingecarribee area.

It raises funds to assist with the successful rehoming of animals at the Wingecarribee Animal Shelter.

Funds are also used for specific needs, including the purchase of speciality food and any elective surgery that may be required to improve the quality of life for animals in care and to better their chances of finding new homes.

Approximately 400 animals from the council-operated shelter in Bowman Road are rehomed every year.
