A $56 million upgrade of the Bowral Sewage Treatment Plant has been completed, increasing the facility's capacity by 50 per cent.

The project, jointly funded by Wingecarribee Shire Council and the NSW Government, will allow the plant to service up to 7,000 more residents while improving wastewater treatment and protecting local waterways.

Wingecarribee Shire Council contributed $49.4 million towards the project, with the NSW Government providing $6.6 million through the Restart Safe and Secure Water Program.

Construction began in June 2023 and the upgraded facility has now been commissioned and is operating at its increased capacity.

The upgrade includes new bioreactors and inlet works, improved odour control, an additional emergency storm pond and a new ultraviolet disinfection system.

According to the NSW Government, the improvements will help ensure high-quality treated water is discharged into the Wingecarribee River, supporting water quality and protecting the river system flowing towards Lake Burragorang.

NSW Minister for Water Rose Jackson said reliable sewer infrastructure was essential to supporting regional communities and future growth.

"People right across our state should have equal access to high quality, reliable sewer services. It may not sound sexy, but this is critical infrastructure our communities need to grow and thrive," she said.

Ms Jackson said the upgraded plant would provide a modern wastewater treatment service while delivering environmental benefits for the Wingecarribee River.

Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan welcomed the completion of the project and thanked the minister for "listening" to the request for funding.
