Exeter residents will meet with Wingecarribee Shire Council early next week to discuss a planned upgrade of the town’s main intersection.

Council has received an $800,000 grant from Transport for New South Wales to undertake the work on the ‘essential’ intersection of Badgerys Way, Bundanoon Road, Middle Road and Exeter Road.

The Exeter Village Association (EVA) said it has been advocating for something to be done at the intersection for many years but said the plan used to obtain State Government funding had been prepared without any consultation or community input.

According to council, the intersection currently has “several issues” including poor drainage, damaged road surfaces, missing kerb and gutter and flooding during heavy rain.

The proposed works will include new pedestrian crossings, lighting, footpaths, kerb and gutter, drainage improvements and pavement reconstruction.

The project will take approximately nine weeks to complete, weather permitting.

It was originally scheduled to commence before the end of the year.

Council representatives met with residents earlier this month to discuss the project and later said it would investigate making a number of changes to the proposed design in response to community feedback.

Chair of the EVA Mark Webeck said this feedback – and the results of the community survey open until Sunday night – would be collated and presented to council on Tuesday.

The survey is available on EVA’s website and is open to anyone with a ‘connection’ to Exeter.

It simply asks people to indicate whether they are happy with the proposed design, whether it requires minor changes, major changes or if it completely fails to deliver the goals of the project.

EVA committee member Brian Wood said plans for the intersection upgrade had been delivered “out of the blue”.

He said council has some very fixed ideas and EVA’s aim was to achieve a ‘balanced’ solution.

“No-one is going to win comprehensively on this,” he said at Wednesday’s meeting.

Mr Wood said council had already made a number of concessions, including the use of coloured, exposed aggregate concrete for the new footpaths to complement the existing granite paths.

However, Mr Wood said EVA wanted to see what the concrete would look like before it went down.

“Once it goes down it’s not going to come up again,” he said.

Council is exploring a number of other changes but has advised that further detailed design work would be required to determine whether or not they could be incorporated into the project.

Residents at the meeting said it was important to protect the village’s heritage character but at the same time acknowledged that something needed to be done to improve safety at the intersection.

Exeter resident and former deputy mayor Ian Scandrett said the funding wouldn’t be lost if the project wasn’t delivered before the end of the 2027/27 financial year.

He said the project would simply move to the bottom of the priority list.

Councillor Sara Moylan – who attended Wednesday’s meeting – said she was happy to advocate on Exeter’s behalf and to raise the matter in the council chamber.

“The community’s voice is critical here,” she told the meeting.

“I don’t want it to go around in circles.”

The EVA survey will be open until midnight on Sunday (October 18) and is available at www.exetervillage.org.au
