Councillor calls for quarterly report on roads
Goulburn-Mulwaree councillors have asked staff to provide them with more information on road maintenance activities so they can effectively respond to ratepayer complaints.

Goulburn-Mulwaree councillors have asked staff to provide them with more information on road maintenance activities so they can effectively respond to ratepayer complaints.
Councillor Caitlin Flint tabled a Notice of Motion at Tuesday night’s meeting asking for a quarterly report on grading works, re-sheeting, resealing and asphalting across the local government area (LGA).
She has also asked that the report record the number of Disaster Recovery projects completed by council and a breakdown on sealed versus unsealed roads across the LGA and how they are categorised for maintenance.
Cr Flint said it would come as no surprise that roads and road maintenance was the single biggest issue facing ratepayers, particularly outside the Goulburn township.
She said this had become even more evident during council’s recent Village Outreach meetings.
“The perception is that we are not doing anything,” she told fellow councillors.
Cr Flint said she was “all too aware” of the sub-standard condition of some of the roads across the Goulburn-Mulwaree network because she travelled them daily.
“This is not the fault of our staff who work tirelessly to maintain them but a symptom of the fact our budget only stretches so far and we receive very minimal assistance from the State and Federal Governments to maintain these to an ‘acceptable’ standard,” she said.
She said many other rural and regional councils were in exactly the same position because they didn’t have enough money.
She said a quarterly report would also provide ratepayers with qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis and in a transparent way.
Cr Flint said it was important for people to understand that 90 per cent of council’s budget was spent on roads.
Her Notice of Motion was carried unanimously.
