Camden Council has thrown its support behind a local sporting club that lost its clubhouse in a devastating fire earlier this month.

The Camden Falcons’ clubhouse at Belgenny Reserve was extensively damaged by fire over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Mayor Therese Fedeli said the loss of the clubhouse had been “deeply felt” by the Falcons community and extended her “sincere thoughts” on behalf of council to the club’s players, coaches, volunteers, committee members, supporters and families.

She tabled a Mayoral Minute at council’s June meeting – passed unanimously – that council write to the Falcons offering its “heartfelt support” and that it continue to support the club.

“While the physical damage is significant, the strength of this club has always come from its people,” Cr Fedeli said in her Notice of Motion.

“Time and again, our community has demonstrated an incredible ability to come together in the face of adversity, and I have no doubt the Falcons will receive strong support across our area in the weeks and months ahead.

“I would also like to acknowledge the emergency services personnel who responded to the incident and thank them for their efforts.”

The Mayor said council had been working with the club “to determine the next steps” and had assisted them to relocate temporarily.

“At this difficult time, it is important that the Camden Falcons know they are not alone,” Cr Fedeli said.

“Council values the contribution the club has made to our community over four decades and stands ready to provide support as the club begins the recovery process.”

A club spokesperson described the damage to the clubhouse as “heartbreaking”, with the entire upper level destroyed and significant damage to the rest of the structure.

Priceless pieces of club memorabilia were destroyed in the blaze.

However, the club is determined to bounce back.

“Camden Falcons has faced adversity before,” the spokesperson said.

“We have weathered floods and setbacks, and each time our community has come together stronger than before. This challenge will be no different.

“The clubhouse may be gone, but the spirit of Camden Falcons remains as strong as ever.

“Our club is not defined by a building. It is defined by its people - our players, families, volunteers, coaches, managers, supporters and sponsors.”

Opposition leader and Member for Hume, Angus Taylor, has inspected the damage and described it as “devastating” for the club.

“The community has been very generous with support for the Falcons, and I know we will all do what we can to help them rebuild.”
