Wingecarribee Shire Council has issued a reminder to motorists that school is back and speed limits apply in school zones – but has provided the wrong times.

School zones typically operate between 8am and 9.30am and between 2.30pm and 4pm on school days.

However council’s well-intentioned Facebook reminder incorrectly advises motorists that school zones operate between 9am and 9.30am of a morning – although it provides the correct afternoon times.

There is a 40km/h speed limit in school zones on all notified school days, excluding weekends, public holidays and public school holidays.

School zones are still in force on school development days (or pupil free days) as some students may still attend school on these days.

Transport for NSW says the 40km/h speed limit helps protect children on their way to and from school.

The lower speed limit reduces the risk and potential severity of a crash.

The penalty for speeding in a school zone starts at $246 with the loss of two demerit points (exceed speed limit 10km/h and under) but can be as much as $3242 with the loss of seven demerit points (exceed speed limit over 45km/h).

There is a range of other school zone driving offences listed in full on the NSW Government website.

School zones across the region came back into force on January 27.
