The first steps towards a long-awaited extension of the Camden Bypass have been announced today, with a promise to ease congestion.

Planning is now underway for the project, which would include a flyover linking the Camden Bypass to Camden Valley Way, allowing motorists to bypass two major intersections and the busy Narellan Town Centre.

The project forms part of the $65 million South West Sydney Roads Planning Program, covering seven major transport corridors across Greater Macarthur and the South West Growth Area.

The corridors include:

  • the Hume Motorway

  • Cowpasture Road

  • Camden Valley Way

  • Campbelltown Road

  • Menangle Road

  • a future extension of Jersey Road

  • and a bypass of Appin town centre

The announcement comes amid continued population growth across Sydney’s south west, with governments under pressure to improve infrastructure and reduce increasingly severe traffic congestion.

Acting Roads Minister John Graham said the project would help fast-growing communities avoid congestion around Narellan.

Camden MP Sally Quinnell said traffic congestion had become a major frustration for local families.

“I speak to parents and locals who tell me they’re leaving earlier in the morning and still getting stuck in traffic around Narellan,” she said.

“At the end of the day, we just want to get home to our families - not spend another half hour sitting behind the wheel.”

As part of the broader planning work, engineering firm GHD has been awarded a contract to develop concept designs and environmental reviews for widening sections of Camden Valley Way between:

  • the M5/M7 interchange and Cowpasture Road

  • and Oran Park to Anderson Road

Transport for NSW says the community will continue to be updated as planning progresses.

Camden Council has estimated a cost of $150 million to complete the Camden Bypass Extension with a total of $1.6 Billion required to complete all necessary road improvements.
