A man has been fatally shot by police after allegedly pointing a rifle at officers who had stopped to help him following a crash north of Yass.

A critical incident investigation is underway after the 45-year-old man was shot at Rugby this afternoon (Sunday).

Police were called to Corringle Lane, near Rugby Road, about 2.50pm following reports a car had crashed into a tree.

Officers from The Hume Police District arrived and found a Chrysler station wagon against a tree, with the driver appearing unconscious inside.

Police said officers approached the vehicle and attempted to render assistance.

However, as they did, the man allegedly aimed a rifle at the officers.

Police then shot the man.

Officers immediately began CPR, but he could not be revived and died at the scene.

He has not yet been formally identified but is believed to be aged 45.
