Member for Wollondilly Judy Hannan has sensationally called on Wingecarribee Shire Council to stop the Bowral South New Living Area.

Bowral South is a major new living area proposed by Wingecarribee Shire Council for land at Burradoo. Council documents suggest more than 2200 homes could ultimately be built on the site, nearly doubling the population of Bowral.

Residents for several years have raised concerns about the proposal, including flood risk and the potential impact on the character of the Southern Highlands. Several flood studies have been completed as part of investigations into the project.

At the April council meeting, business papers revealed council has already spent more than $600,000 progressing work associated with the proposed new living area. The land remains privately owned and has not been rezoned.

Hannan raised her deep concerns about Bowral South in NSW Parliament tonight (Tuesday evening).

“I rise to express my strong opposition to Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Bowral South project”.

Hannan was clear, “Planning for Bowral South should be stopped”.

In remarks that will send shockwaves through Wingecarribee Shire Council Hannan was clear “Bowral South is an illogical planning exercise. The State Government should halt council’s wasteful resources” and “the community would prefer council focuses on sustainable financial resourcing decisions.”

Hannan concluded “The government should not trust council to manage the planning proposal”

Council’s promotional material describes Bowral South as “From the river’s edge to the village heart”.

Stuart Carless will have a full report tomorrow morning.
