Bowral Football Club’s First Grade side fought hard to maintain a 6 – nil victory against the Robertson – Burrawang Rovers Premier League 2 (Second Grade) side, who were playing at Robertson’s home ground, Hampden Park on Sunday afternoon.

Both sides gave as good as they got, with one Robertson player winded by an elbow to the ribs, and another down for a minute or so on the sideline until he could get up again after a brutal tackle from a Bowral defender.

First goal went to Bowral’s no. 17 player, Gideon Egbeyale in the 16th minute.

Another goal followed by Liam East in the 24th minute.

Two goals also came from Charles Shelley in the second half in the 49th and 52nd minutes; and two to Chris Wilson in the 78th and 86th minute.

Bowral goalkeeper Larry Mullan also held onto all the goal attempts Robertson threw at him.

Bowral coach Glenn Shelton told The Southern Wire that it was good to see his men have an enjoyable afternoon.

“We played well and it was good to see the boys knock the ball around,” he said.

“Our season has been, I must admit a bit inconsistent in places – we've only lost one game - but there is still a long way to go, and you never know.

“I think when the competition is into the top four, it’ll be all first division teams and that’ll make a difference, because at the moment there is some ‘lop-sided’ results which is the nature of this competition as it stands.”

All sides now have a two-week break over the Winter school holidays, not returning to Round 8 until July 15.

“The break will be handy, as some of our older guys are starting to carry a few injuries,” Shelton said.

“But that will hold us in good stead for the back end of the season for them to have that recovery time.”

Robertson – Burrawang captain/coach Steve Shepherd was gracious in defeat.

“The better team won and Bowral are the benchmark for the competition around here,” Shepherd told The Southern Wire.

“No complaints, although playing twice in two days is tough (they faced Moss Vale and beat them 10 – 1 on Saturday at Joe Smith Oval in Yerrinbool); and we were brought back down to earth today!”

However, Shepherd maintained positivity that Robertson is still in with a chance.

“We’re still in with a chance due to the goal difference,” he said.

“Good luck to Bowral now for the rest of the year – they're a good side – I expect to see them in or around the Grand Final, and hopefully our boys can learn from today and just pick it up as an experience and go again next fortnight.”
