Local residents have additional time to comment on the controversial Berrima Gaol ‘adaptive re-use’ proposal.

The exhibition period was originally due to close on November 12 but has now been extended until November 26.

The Southern Wire understands the exhibition period has been extended because the proponent, Blue Sox Pty Ltd, failed to lodge all the necessary documents with its original application.

While the closing date for submissions has been updated on the NSW Planning Portal website, the closing date on the proponent’s Berrima Gaol project website still incorrectly lists the closing date as November 12.

The Blue Sox proposal includes boutique accommodation outside of the gaol’s western wall, a 195-space carpark to the south and a restaurant, function centre and wellness centre inside the gaol walls.

Community group Berrima Heritage Matters has described the Blue Sox proposal as “inappropriate overdevelopment” and is urging local residents to join the campaign against it by lodging a submission or signing an ePetition.

“We reiterate that we know the gaol needs to be redeveloped but the Blue Sox proposal is the wrong one for the gaol and for Berrima,” it has said.

To view the proposal and to make a submission visit www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects and search for Berrima Hotel.
