16 parking spaces axed in Argyle Street upgrade
Transport for NSW has confirmed the final design for traffic and pedestrian changes along Argyle Street in Moss Vale.

Transport for NSW has confirmed the final design for traffic and pedestrian changes along Argyle Street in Moss Vale.
Work is set to begin in mid-April, but the project is drawing criticism over parking losses, access issues and the scope of consultation.
The plan includes resurfacing, new line marking, upgraded street lighting, dedicated right-turn bays and new pedestrian refuge islands along the Illawarra Highway through the town centre. Work will begin between the Robertson Road roundabout and Arthur Street.
As part of the changes, 16 parking spaces will be removed, with Transport stating the loss is an ‘unavoidable consequence’ of safety improvements.
Transport also confirmed it has changed elements of its original design, dropping proposed right-turn restrictions at Arthur Street and Railway Street following community feedback. It says dedicated right-turn lanes can still be installed at Valetta Street, Arthur Street, Kirkham Road and Lackey Road while maintaining the existing traffic layout.
Former Wingecarribee Shire deputy mayor Ian Scandrett says key issues remain unresolved, including the absence of traffic lights to allow right turns out of Valetta Street and Arthur Street onto Argyle Street, leaving those movements “permitted” but difficult for drivers. He suggested a small roundabout near the former Whytes building as a possible alternative.
Mr Scandrett also pointed to planned growth in the area, including close to 1,000 homes proposed at Ashbourne, saying the design does not reflect the scale of development coming to Moss Vale.
He also said the absence of raised pedestrian crossings along Argyle Street means safety issues remain unresolved.
Transport says consultation in late 2023 helped shape the final design and that it is continuing to engage with the community as the project moves toward construction.
Timing for construction of some intersections and pedestrian islands is still to be confirmed, while traffic lights at Waite Street remain under investigation.
