It has been a busy weekend for Goulburn Police. The latest incident saw a high-speed police pursuit through the streets of Goulburn end on an abandoned railway line after a Holden allegedly reached speeds of 125km/h before continuing to drive on its rims.
Police said officers were patrolling Goulburn about midnight on Sunday when they attempted to stop a Holden sedan on Union Street.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, officers from The Hume Police District commenced a pursuit through the Goulburn CBD.
Police allege the Holden reached speeds of up to 125km/h in signposted 60km/h zones during the pursuit.
Officers successfully deployed road spikes on Marys Mount Road, but the Holden allegedly continued travelling around Goulburn on its rims.
The pursuit took another turn when the vehicle allegedly drove through Grafton Street Park, onto Grafton Street and then dropped down onto a nearby abandoned railway line.
Police continued following the Holden as it travelled along the railway line before the vehicle eventually came to a stop near Sydney Road.
The driver allegedly left the vehicle and attempted to escape into nearby bushland.
Following a foot pursuit, police arrested a 35-year-old man nearby and took him to Goulburn Police Station.
Police allege officers located a backpack containing drug paraphernalia during the arrest. The items were seized and will undergo forensic examination.
Police will further allege the man was driving while holding a suspended learner's permit.
The 35-year-old was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive at speed and drive while licence suspended.
He was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Local Court 3 on Sunday, where he was again refused bail.
The man is due to appear before Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday, August 19.
