Most people make a significant career change at least once or twice in their lifetimes – and while his roles might have changed, Ron Witt has clocked up a remarkable 50 years working for local government in the Yass area.

Ron spent more than 30 of those years working as an animal control officer and for the past 40 years also worked at the sewage treatment works, juggling two roles at once.

He has been presented with a certificate recognising the milestone by council’s Director Infrastructure and Assets, Nathan Cooke and Mayor Jasmin Jones.

Council has issued a statement saying Ron’s career has been defined by “commitment and unwavering dedication to serving the Yass Valley community”.

Mr Witt started as a casual employee in road construction on November 13, 1975 before moving into a permanent role.

His career began with Goodradigbee Shire Council and has spanned two council amalgamations, leading to Yass Valley Council.

During that time he has worked in numerous other roles including as a street cleaner and garbage collector and has filled in across other operational areas when needed.

He is now considered council’s trusted expert on pump stations and sewage treatment operations.

Council said Mr Witt was well-known for his reliability, friendliness, technical knowledge and willingness to assist colleagues and the community at any time.

“His contribution has played a vital role in maintaining essential services for the community over many decades,” it said in a statement.

Mr Witt said he had enjoyed his time with council and was “looking forward to many more”.
