A man has been charged with dangerous driving and has had his licence suspended after a series of incidents on New Year’s Eve which ended with his arrest in Yass and his transportation to Goulburn Base Hospital for a mental health assessment.

At about 11.23am on Wednesday, officers attached to The Hume Police District received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls about a red Hyundai Accent allegedly being driven erratically through the streets of Harden.

Members of the public told police the vehicle was being driven at high speed in built-up areas and that it had also mounted the footpath on Neil Street, forcing pedestrians to take evasive action.

Police attached to The Hume Police District say they received seven emergency calls relating to the vehicle within eight minutes.

The vehicle was later seen at Harden Hospital where the driver was allegedly conducting ‘burnouts’ in the hospital carpark.

A short time later police received additional calls that the vehicle was travelling northbound on the Hume Highway near Bookham at high speed, allegedly weaving between other vehicles and overtaking dangerously.

Police did not initiate a pursuit due to the “extreme risk” posed to members of the public but continued to monitor the vehicle as it travelled towards Yass.

During that time they allege the vehicle crossed onto the incorrect side of the highway “multiple times”.

The vehicle entered Yass and travelled along Rossi Street before stopping on Pritchett Street where the driver attempted to evade police on foot.

He was apprehended and conveyed to the Yass Police Station.

The driver underwent an oral fluid test which returned a positive indication for methamphetamines.

Police say they were forced to discontinue the driver’s arrest because of mental health concerns.

He was detained under Section 22 of the Mental Health Act and transported to Goulburn Base Hospital for assessment.

He was later charged with Drive Mannerer Dangerous and his licence was suspended.

Laboratory results relating to the oral fluid test are pending.

Anyone with footage relating to any of the incidents has been asked to contact the Yass Police Station directly on 6226 9339.

The incident reference number is E86125417.
