Girls Blaze a Trail for Southern Districts

History has been made in Southern Districts cricket — with the Zone fielding its first-ever Under-15 Girls team in this week’s Youth Championships at Raymond Terrace.
Under the guidance of professional coach Holly Halford-Smith, the young squad punched well above its weight — grabbing a breakthrough win against Mid North Coast.
Bowling first, the girls tore through the Coast’s line-up for just 71 runs, then chased down the total for the loss of only one wicket.
Halford-Smith couldn’t hide her pride. “The girls have been on fire in the field — setting a standard that’s second to none,” she said.
The success caps off a strong year for women’s cricket in the region, following the inaugural Girls Regional Academy run over the off-season — also led by Halford-Smith — which focused on skill, teamwork and a love of the game.
“It’s about celebrating effort, learning and connection,” she added. “I can’t wait to keep being part of their journey in the years to come.”
Representative cricket across the Zone fires up this Sunday, with the Under-16s, Under-14s and Open Men’s teams launching their 2025 campaign. Full coverage in The Southern Wire on Monday.
