Federal government providing funding to make Oallen Ford Road safer

The Albanese Government is continuing to improve road safety on regional and remote roads, delivering funding towards the upgrade of Oallen Ford Road, south of Windellama, approximately 40kms southeast of Goulburn.
This investment will improve road safety, productivity and road resilience along a key 3.2km section of Oallen Ford Road, which is an important regional and inter-regional transport route.
The Albanese Government is committing $4.87 million to the project under the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program (SLRIP), and a further $1.21 million under the Roads to Recovery program.
The $6.1 million project includes widening and upgrading of the existing pavement, replacement of a low level, single lane causeway (at Cartroad Creek) and the widening of a narrow culvert bridge (at Budjong Creek).
The project will also remove a 15-tonne load limit on this section of the road to allow for heavy vehicle traffic regardless of its gross mass, which is particularly beneficial given the road’s importance as a local agricultural freight route.
“Improving heavy vehicle routes across our regions is really beneficial to our local community,” Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories and Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain MP said.
“These upgrades will not only make the road safer, they will also make the road more resilient to floods.
“Regional councils often need extra financial support to help with meeting increasing costs and continual pressure on transport infrastructure due to climate change and extreme weather.
“That’s why the Albanese Government is delivering the funding to local governments, like Goulburn Mulwaree Council, with a need to help make our roads safer.”
Goulburn Mayor Nina Dillon agreed.
“Goulburn Mulwaree Council welcomes this important investment from the Australian Government in the upgrade of Oallen Ford Road, which will improve safety, flood resilience and heavy vehicle access along a key regional freight route,” Mayor Dillon said.
“This funding delivers real benefits for local communities and agricultural producers and supports Council in maintaining safer, more reliable roads.”
This funding is part of a more than $86.2 million nationwide commitment under the latest tranche of the program.
Of this, more than $77.6 million is earmarked for projects in regional Australia, which will mean more resilient roads for regional communities.
The SLRIP commenced on 1 July 2024 to provide funding for projects to address current and emerging priorities in road infrastructure needs.
At least $200 million per year is available under the program.
