Bannaby in the Southern Tablelands will be home to one of six new ‘big batteries’ announced by the NSW Government.

The long-duration batteries are designed to strengthen the state’s energy grid and provide low-cost, renewable energy.

The batteries are so powerful they can run one third of Sydney’s households for a day.

A NSW Government spokesperson said the batteries would ensure that NSW is on track to exceed its energy storage targets for the future.

The projects are being underwritten by the NSW Government but will still be subject to the relevant planning approvals.

One media outlet initially reported that a battery would be located in Bowral – however that report was incorrect.

The five other new batteries will be located in Wallerang near Lithgow, Bowmans Creek in the Upper Hunter, Armidale, Kingswood near Tamworth and Ebor near Armidale.

The Bannaby battery will be the second largest of the six in terms of its storage capacity at 2,676 MWh.

NSW has the most battery projects in Australia with more than 200 projects now either under construction or in the planning pipeline.

“These six big batteries mean we’re on track to smash our storage targets, harvesting the sun and the wind so we can power NSW around the clock and put downward pressure on prices,” Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe said.

“We’re not stopping here – NSW will support more projects so we’re ready for a grid powered by renewable energy, supported by gas.”

The six new batteries are expected to be completed by 2030.
